My friend and neighbor Meghan started a new podcast, The Mommy Artist Podcast, last year. It’s a podcast for women, moms, and artists. It helps women who are often working on their passions in the margins while raising kids feel valid and seen. I’ve enjoyed listening to her fun, interesting, and insightful interviews. Even though I’ve never considered myself an artist, I’ve greatly enjoyed listening to her inspiring guests.

When my second book came out, I realized that being an author is under the “artist” umbrella. Then I started thinking about how I’m so passionate about STEAM vs STEM, and also how I have a degree in graphic design. I finally saw that I have been an artist (and artist supporter) my whole life!

I reached out to Meghan to ask if she’d consider having me on her podcast, and luckily she said yes! I have been on two other podcasts (Engineering Heroes and What Do you Do?), but this one felt different because she records a video for YouTube along with the audio!

It was a little terrifying walking into her studio and seeing the lights, camera, and the microphone. I clearly have never used a microphone before, as you will see if you watch it on YouTube. I didn’t know I talked with my hands so much until I saw myself moving them all around, unable to keep the microphone close to my mouth, lol!

Megan has a natural talent at hosting. She helps guest feel comfortable and confident and guides the interview well. I was nervous during the start of the interview, and very aware of the cameras. But as the interview progressed, I forgot about all that and just felt like I was chatting with a friend. Maybe it led me to share more than I would have if I had continued to be conscious of the the cameras, but it did make the interview more honest and fun. 😉

Megan was always making me laugh throughout the episode, and she knew how to ask questions to share the best of my story. I share about my STEAM origins as a kid: my parents had STEM degrees and a passion for the arts. Their example makes me want to do the same for my kids.

I share why I chose chemical engineering as my major and the challenges along the way to my degree. I share a bit about my career, including my move to Australia. It was in Australia that I got my degree in graphic design!

I share about starting the blog as a way of writing about and processing my emotions as a new mom and working woman engineer. That eventually led to where I am now with a STEAM activities for kids focused blog and two new books. We end the episode with an easy and fun experiment from my book, The Amazing Book of STEM!

Please check it out! You can watch the full episode on YouTube, or listen on your favorite podcast streaming platform. I’ve embedded the youtube video, as well as the podcast audio below.

Women in STEAM: A Chat with Emily The Mommy Artist Podcast

Today, we are joined by engineer, mom, and STEAM educator Emily Vecere to discuss creativity, curiosity, and learning. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics, and Emily is passionate about helping kids explore these subjects through hands-on activities and imaginative thinking. Emily shares how art and science are more connected than we often realize, working together to inspire innovation, problem-solving, and creativity. We talk about the realities of being a woman in STEM, balancing career and family life, and raising curious, creative kids.

Be sure to follow Meghan at The Mommy Artist Podcast on YouTube and Instagram to see more inspiring interviews from mommy artists like me!
