Today’s Friday Favorite STEAM book is There was an Old Astronaut who Swallowed the Moon! By Lucille Colandro and illustrated by Jared Lee. This is part of the popular There was an Old Lady series of books, but this time the Old Lady becomes an Old Astronaut!

We have several books from the Old Lady series, and I’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of reading them to my kids. They are repetitive and kind of annoy me. But my kids LOVE them! I know the repetition is good for them learning to read, but I don’t want to be the one reading it to them…Luckily, we can meet in the middle with this STEAM focused space version.

BOOK OVERVIEW:

The lovable Old Astronaut swallows the moon, and she doesn’t stop there! She goes on to swallow a star, planet, comet, meteoroid, rocket, and satellite! You will learn about space and be entertained by the Old Astronaut’s antics. The illustrations help you enter the Old Astronaut’s world.

MY BOOK REVIEW:

This is by far my favorite Old Lady book that I’ve read so far. I enjoyed how after each silly thing she swallowed there is a break with two kids giving facts about the space item. For example, after she swallowed a planet, the next page showed the kids discussing how the sun is our planet’s closest star and our solar system has only one star.

At the end of the book there are detailed facts about the moon, stars, planets, comets, meteoroids, rockets, and satellites – all the things she swallowed in the story. This isn’t just a silly repetitive book, it’s a great introduction to space for kids!

STEAM CONCEPTS LEARNED:

  • Science: This book is full of surprising and interesting space facts!
  • Art: This is a great book for beginning readers with its rhyming and repetitive verses. Kids will also love the fun illustrations.

I’m so glad my son found this book at his school’s Book Fair last fall. It has been one of our favorites since then, and I don’t mind reading it to them knowing they are learning about space!
