It took me over a year to decide to start this blog. I first had the idea when I had some time on my hands: I was at home on maternity leave with my newborn son. While he nursed I had quiet time to sit and think.

I thought a lot about my adult life: choosing a major and starting college, meeting my husband, struggling in classes and almost giving up on my engineering dreams, eventually finding success in engineering school, getting my first engineering job, deciding to switch to career fields, becoming an expat in Australia and traveling all over the world, and finally moving back to the US before my son was born. I remembered the ups the downs, the good and bad, and in the end I was happy about every decision I made because it all led me to that perfect moment feeding my precious son.

While I thought about my career, I thought about how I wished I had more female role models and mentors along the way. Yes, I’ve worked with some brilliant and inspiring women, but I’m an introvert so I would have loved a resource like a blog to quietly read about a female engineer’s career to help me decide on my major or help me through rough days at school or work.

Mostly I wanted somewhere to read about what other working STEM moms were doing. How are they balancing career and family? Because I didn’t know how I was going to do that when I went back to work.

But real life got in the way of starting this blog. I went back to work and if I ever did have a free hour, it was spent vegging out on the couch checking social media and watching TV. And I had fears about sharing my life with the world. I’m not really an open and outgoing person, and I find it hard to share details about my life to even my closest friends.

But this little idea never faded from the back of my mind and I decided it’s time to get started or just let it go. So here I am, completely out of my comfort zone, about to share my life as an engineer, wife and mom with you.

I hope you’ll follow along as I post about my past and the adventures that led me to where I am today. I’ll also post about my life now as a working mom and I’ll look to you for advice on how to make it work. I hope some of my amazing and talented friends will also stop by to guest post about their experiences and careers.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you find this blog interesting and informative.

Emily
